BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team suffered a five-set loss (25-27, 25-21, 25-21, 13-25, 15-8) to Marshall on Sunday. It was Senior Day for the Owls and FAU recognized its seven seniors prior to the match.
The Owls trailed Marshall 14-9 midway through the first set. Each time it appeared that FAU would completely close the gap, the Thundering Herd answered to regain control. The deficit was still five, 23-18, late in the frame. Massiel Matos began a run of six-straight points to take a 24-23 edge. Back-to-back Marshall kills gave the Herd a set point, but Sydney Nemtuda sandwiched a pair of kills around a Marshall attack error, giving the Owls a 27-25 victory.
Another quick Marshall start put the Herd ahead 10-3 in the second set. FAU steadily worked on the deficit and eventually tied the score at 21. However, a Marshall went on a 4-0 run to even the match at one set each.
In the third set, FAU once again found itself on the wrong end of a 15-9 score. The Owls got the margin down to three at 17-14 but couldn't get closer and eventually lost 25-21.
Camryn Vogler served the Owls to a 5-1 advantage early in the fourth set. The cushion was three, 8-5, when
Kori Varney and
Jordan Yauch each had long serving runs, pushing the advantage to 19-7. Yauch put down the final kill of the set, tying the match with a 25-13 FAU win.
Marshall took a 6-2 advantage in the fifth set, and the Owls were unable to make up the stagger, ultimately losing the frame 15-8.
