BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University women's soccer concludes a four-game road trip with two Conference USA tilts this weekend, against Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss.
The venue and gametime for Friday night's matchup with the Lady Techsters has changed. It will now be played at 4 p.m. Eastern at James Field at Hoss Garrett Stadium. The Owls finish out the weekend against the Golden Eagles on Sunday, a 2 p.m. Eastern start.
Owls' Week in Review
The Owls (8-2-0, 2-0-0 C-USA) began this stint away from home with two scheduled matches last weekend, but the first – against Oral Roberts – was rained out. FAU was able to salvage the trip with a 2-1 C-USA victory over UAB, with scores by
Pernille Velta and
Madison Davenport.
The eight wins to start the year is the best in program history, topping a mark held for nearly 30 years (a 7-2-1 beginning to the 1992 season). The current streak of six wins in a row equals a stretch last season (from Sept. 14 to Oct. 5) as well as in 2015, as the longest in the Coach Baker era. The last time the team has won seven consecutive games came back in 2006.
Updated RPI rankings came out on Monday, and the Owls still rate among the top 20 teams in the nation, slotting No. 19. They held firm as the No. 5 team in the United Soccer Coaches South Region poll as well.
Owls' Weekend in Preview
Along with FAU, one of the hotter teams in C-USA through non-conference play has been Louisiana Tech (9-1-1, 1-1-0 C-USA). The Lady Techsters actually started out the season 8-0-0 before darkness forced a tie against Grambling State. The squad then took their league opener over Old Dominion, 2-1, before suffering their first loss of the year last Sunday, 2-1 in double overtime at WKU. Autumn Woodard ranks as not only the top goal scorer in C-USA, but in all of Division I, with 13. She has had at least one goal in nine of LA Tech's 11 matches.
Southern Miss (5-5-0, 0-2-0 C-USA) saw a four-match win streak snapped at the hands of their first two league opponents, falling 1-0 in back-to-back affairs to WKU (in 2 OT) and North Texas. The Golden Eagles will have a Friday night matchup with FIU before hosting the Owls. A trio of players lead the way with four goals each: Alice Campos, Jenny Caracheo and Hailey Pohevitz.
Opponent History
LA Tech and FAU have rarely met in the Owls' six-year tenure in C-USA. They were not scheduled against one another in the regular season in 2016 or 2017, but did meet in the '16 C-USA postseason, with FAU winning 3-0. Last year in the regular season in Boca Raton,
Miracle Porter notched the game-winner in the 69th minute for a 1-0 victory and a 3-1 Owl advantage in the series.
Against Southern Miss, FAU will be looking for a bit of retribution, as the Golden Eagles knocked the Owls out in the C-USA semifinal round, 1-0 in Norfolk, Virginia. Earlier in the regular season, in Boca, the Owls won 2-0. FAU holds the edge in the series against USM, 3-2.
