FARGO. N.D. – Florida Atlantic women's soccer and North Dakota State battled to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night at Dacotah Field on last-minute goals in each half. This now marks five straight matches without a loss for the Owls (2-2-4).
THE TURNING POINT
It was scoreless between the Owls and Bison (2-3-4) until under two minutes to go in the first half. A quick transition by the visitors saw a throw-in by Georgia Cousins find the head of Carly Paz, who pushed it ahead to Maiya Castillo. Her immediate long pass ahead found fellow freshman Olivia Surprenant on a breakaway. Surprenant's first attempt was deflected by the oncoming NDSU goalkeeper, but off the rebound, the second shot was true, finding the back of the net for a 1-0 halftime edge.
THE FINISH
NDSU was able to tie the match with just 52 seconds left, but FAU rushed the goal and was afforded one more opportunity. With 17 seconds on the clock, a red card on the Bison goalkeeper led to an indirect free kick. After a touch, Lola Hathorne's shot was blocked by the wall of defenders, and a second try by Castillo was saved by the second keeper to all but end the match.
