BOCA RATON, Fla. – On the cusp of clinching a spot in the Conference USA Championship, the upcoming weekend sees Florida Atlantic University women's soccer hosting two teams already punched into the tournament, in the Lone Star State twosome of North Texas and Rice.
FAU (11-3-1, 5-1-1 C-USA for 16 points) is in fourth place in the league standings, a point behind Rice (8-4-2, 5-0-2 C-USA, 17 points), and two behind co-leaders North Texas (11-4-0, 6-1-0, 18 points) and Charlotte (also 6-1-0). The Owls still rate highly in the national RPI ledger, at No. 32. North Texas is No. 60, and Rice No. 63, the next two among a total of six C-USA teams now rated in the top 100 (No. 69 Charlotte, No. 88 UAB and No. 98 Old Dominion).
Owls' Week in Review
The final road trip of this 2019 regular season saw the Owls come away with a tie (1-1 in two overtimes at Old Dominion) and a victory (3-1 at Middle Tennessee). That moved the squad to 3-1-1 on the road in C-USA play, and they put a 2-0 home mark on the line this weekend. Individually,
Mary O'Hara, with nine goals, is a tally away from becoming the first Owl in double digits in a single season since 2012 (which would be the eighth such instance in program history).
Pernille Velta and
Sammy Vitols are next with five goals each, and a quintet of Owls have three assists apiece: Velta, Vitols,
Tiril Haga,
Elisha Holmes and
Carolynn Wotring.
Owls' Weekend in Preview
North Texas has won eight of their last 10, with the lone C-USA loss coming on the road at UAB two weekends ago. The Mean Green rebounded after that with twin 2-0 home wins, against WKU and Marshall. Berklee Peters is third in the conference with 11 goals, and Kelsey Brann leads all C-USA netminders in shutouts (nine), goals against average (0.69) and save percentage (.818).
The weekend's second matchup comes against the conference's other Owls, who were under .500 before the C-USA slate, but haven't been defeated since Sept. 15. Most recently, they swept two at home, 2-1 over Marshall and 1-0 over WKU. With five goals each to lead the team are Haley Kostyshyn and Louise Stephens; Delaney Schultz has four goals and four assists. The squad's two keepers have four wins each – Maya Hoyer and Bella Kilgore.
Opponent History
NT holds an 11-2 advantage, with both FAU wins coming under Coach Baker (in 2014 and in the 2016 C-USA Championship). At a high school field, and in a constant heavy rain in Denton last season, the Mean Green edged out the Owls, 2-1.
Rice is a game better in the all-time series, 3-2 over FAU. Last season, it was a 1-0 FAU victory in Houston, with Haga earning the game-winner just before the halftime break.
