Men’s Tennis Gathers Many W’s at Bedford Cup

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team saw a plethora of success at the Bedford Cup over the weekend, hosted by Florida State, putting together a combined 11 singles wins, as well as five doubles victories along the way.

Notables:

In the Singles A bracket, the Owls went 3-1 in the round of 32, with wins by Alvaro Fernandez Horta, Jason Legall and Yovan Lambros
Legall and Lambros took care of things in straight sets. Legall topped a USF opponent, 6-4, 7-6 (3); Lambros went over his competition from FGCU, 6-4, 7-5
Fernandez Horta went out to a tiebreaker, but overcame his UCF opposition, 6-4, 5-7, 10/4
Legall would go on to add a round of 16 victory, over UNF, 6-3, 6-4, before bowing out in the quarters
More wins came in Singles B, led by Bryan Kulikov, making it all the way out to the semifinal round
The freshman had a bye into the second round, then took a straight set win in against a competitor from UNF (6-3, 6-1)
That set him up with a match against teammate Hunter Robbins, who had won twice (6-4, 6-1 over FAMU and 6-2, 2-6, 10/8 over BCU). Kulikov won the quarterfinal matchup, but defaulted in the semis
Also in that bracket, Luis Fernandez Labarta earned a first round win over FGCU, 6-0, 6-4
Fernandez Horta teamed with Maxime Lapraille in Doubles A for a nice victory over a University of Florida pair, 8-4. The Owl duo was just edged out in the quarters, 8-7 (5) in a tiebreak by a USF team
The Owls wrapped the event strong with three wins in doubles in an additional bracket: Robbins and Fernandez Labarta with an 8-0 sweep over FAMU; Lambros and Legall over Stetson, 8-3; and Fernandez Horta and Lapraille topping UNF, 8-5
