BOCA RATON, Fla. –Â
Lachlan Shiver and
Megan Giovanniello of the Florida Atlantic University cross country team have swept the Conference USA Athlete of the Week awards, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. This is the third honor of its kind for Shiver in his career and first for Giovanniello.
Shiver had a career night last Friday at the UCF Invitational. Not only did the senior win the men's 8K, but he broke a 10-year school record in the process by surpassing his previous personal record by over 37 seconds. The Coral Springs, Florida native clocked in at 25:05.50 to capture his second win of the season and third overall in his career. Shiver now holds school records in the men's 5K and 8K.
"Lachlan has put in a great deal of work both academically and athletically, and it is awesome that he gets recognized for all of his hard work," said head cross country coach
Alex Smolka. "It is awesome to have him in an Owl uniform!"
Giovanniello also had a great night for the Owls in the women's first 6K race of the season. The junior led the way for FAU, crossing the finish line at 23:37.30. Her time helped her capture 14th place and the top finish for the Owls.
"Megan was unable to compete for us in cross country last year, but has come back with a vengeance. Receiving this award will hopefully continue to fuel her fire for the remainder of the season. I am very happy she received this honor!"
The men's and women's cross country teams competed at the UCF Invitational last Friday night. For the men, all six Owls captured personal records in the 8K to lead FAU to a second place finish. On the women's side, six runners crossed the finish line in the top-20 to contribute to a fourth-place finish.
FAU men's and women's cross country will travel outside of Florida for the first time this season for the Blazer Classic at UAB on Friday, Oct. 18. Races will commence at 9 a.m.
