BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team extended its winning streak to 10 with a sweep of UAB (25-17, 25-21, 25-23) in its Conference USA opener on Sunday. The Owls improved their overall record to 10-3 on the season.

Set number one was tied 4-4 when FAU went on an 8-4 run to take a 12-8 lead. Another scoring run pushed the margin out to eight, 19-11. UAB trimmed the gap to five, but didn't get any closer, as the Owls won 25-17. Kori Varney's serving helped the Owls win the first three points of the second set, which proved vital, as the Blazers (8-8, 0-2 C-USA) stayed close for most of the frame. The score was tied five different times during the set, the final occasion coming at 19-19. However, the Owls reasserted control of the action, closing the stanza with a 6-2 run to take a two sets to none lead. In the third set, it was Abbi Reid's serving that built an early three point lead. That cushion ultimately turned out to be even more essential, as set three featured 16 ties and six lead changes. After UAB tied the score at 23 on a Victoria Young kill and a service ace, Sigourney Kame and Emily Hise put down back-to-back kills to complete the sweep for FAU.

Notables

The Owls won their conference opener for the first time since 2014.
It was also FAU's eighth home win in a row. All eight wins have been sweeps.
Massiel Matos tallied a match high 17 kills and added 10 digs for her team best fifth double-double of the year.
Sigourney Kame posted 13 kills for the Owls.
Alex Cardona led all players with 15 digs.
Ivone Martinez just missed a double-double with 42 assists and nine digs.
