BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team recorded their first clean sheet of the season in defeating Oral Roberts Thursday night at FAU Soccer Stadium, by the score of 3-0.
Turning Point:
For the third time this season, midfielder Mary O'Hara needed just a few minutes to put the Owls (4-6-0) on the board. She already had two on-target attempts in the first two minutes saved, but the third time was the charm, at 3:22. The lead was doubled in 22nd when Jessica Monteiro rocketed a rebound in for a 2-0 advantage.
The Finish:
FAU, who had 13 shots at the break, didn't let up after intermission, and reached three goals for the second home match in a row in the 59th minute. Hailey Landrus eluded two Oral Roberts (5-7-0) defenders, crossed it to her right, and found Pernille Velta, depositing her first goal of the season into the net. The Owls' defense limited the Golden Eagles to just three shots in the second half, with two saves by Jennifer Ocampo towards her five on the night.
Notables:
The season amount of goals for the trio is now three for O'Hara, two for Monteiro and one for Velta
Ebba Blomqvist notched her second assist, on the Monteiro tally, and for the freshman Landrus, it was collegiate assist No. 1
The Owls had not had 10 shots in a half all season, but did it in both stanzas Thursday: 13 in the first and 11 more in the second. The team surpassed their previous season high in attempts, 14, just 4:25 into the second half, and outshot Golden Eagles 24-9 in total
In all, 22 players saw time on the pitch. With the exception of Ocampo's 90, no other Owl played the entirety; Blomqvist led all FAU field players with 81, followed by Alex Maxson (79), Landrus (77), Emma Grissom (71) and Miracle Porter (57)
O'Hara's five shots, and three shots on goal, are FAU's high in a game all season
Quotable:
"We got off to a nice start, I thought we were well-prepared with scouting report, video and game plan," said Head Coach Patrick Baker. "We had a couple of really good looks early, Mary (O'Hara) got us on the board with a nice goal … the game got a little flat, but then we got a timely second goal, which was huge. And I just thought we got more of the game tonight, which we just hadn't had in such a long time, probably since Niagara. It was just nice to see."
