Football’s Al-Shaair and Lewis Named to Nagurski Watch List

Florida Atlantic University football's Azeez Al-Shaair and Shelton Lewis each are preseason contenders for the Bronko Nagurski Award, named to the organization's watch list on Tuesday.

Al-Shaair and Lewis are two of 97 defensive standouts on the list among 61 universities and 10 FBS conferences. The Bronko Nagurski award works in conjunction with the Football Writers Association of America to select the nation's Defensive Player of the Year.

Al-Shaair began his summer as one of five student-athletes to receive the Wilma Rudolph Award. He was then named Conference USA's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. And prior to returning from C-USA Media Days, Al-Shaair was named as a member on the Chuck Bednarik Watch List. This week, he was listed as a member of the The Butkus Award® watch list, and now to the Nagurski Watch List.

Lewis, in addition to this recognition, also is a member of the Preseason Watch List for the 2018 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award. He joined Al-Shaair as Preseason All-Conference USA as well.

The Owls, who are on the country's second longest winning streak (10), will report to campus for preseason drills Thursday, Aug. 2. FAU will open the 2018 season at Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 1 at noon. The game will be carried on Fox.
