FAU Student-Athletes are Strong Competitors on the Field and In the Classroom

Florida Atlantic University student-athletes are proving that they can achieve at high levels both on the court and in the classroom. FAU student-athletes posted their seventh consecutive semester of a 3.0 or better grade point average at the conclusion of the fall semester with a combined 3.031 GPA.

In total, nearly 60 percent (58.56 percent) of FAU student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA during the fall semester, a number that is up from 57.60 percent in the fall of 2017 and 56.05 percent in 2016. Of FAU's 432 student-athletes there were also 15 perfect 4.0 GPAs.

"What an accomplishment for our student-athletes," said Vice President and Director of Athletics, Brian White. "To record seven consecutive semesters of a 3.0 or better GPA is not only a testament to the hard work of our student-athletes in the classroom but also to our academic staff who have created the foundation and framework for them to be successful in the classroom."

Leading the way for the Owls, is the women's golf team who earned a department-best 3.706 GPA, which is among the leaders in Conference USA. In total, 16 sports posted a combined GPA of 3.0 or better, including all of the women's sports.

"We are proud of our student for not only being committed to winning in their sport but also winning in the classroom," said Eric Coleman, FAU's Director of the Student-Athlete Center for Academic Excellence and Associate Athletic Director. "For the seventh consecutive semester the FAU student-athletes have shown us what 'Winning in Paradise' is all about."

During the fall, several FAU student-athletes were honored for their academic accomplishments. Hagy Jalon of the men's soccer team earned CoSIDA Google Academic All-District first team honors and was a member of the Conference USA All-Academic team.

2018 Mackey Award watch list member Harrison Bryant from the FAU football team also earned a spot on the league's all-academic team. Bryant is the fourth Owl football player to be named to the academic all-conference team.

Ebba Blomqvist from the Co-C-USA regular-season champion women's soccer team earned a spot on the United Soccer Coaches Women's Scholar All-South Region team and was joined by teammate Alex Maxson on the Conference USA All-Academic team. Additionally, Laclan Shriver from men's cross country earned Conference USA All-Academic Team honors.

The Owls also saw 11 student-athletes graduate in December.
