The Academic Support of the SASC provides a wide variety of academic support services as well as assists student-athletes in connecting with campus resources to help student-athletes become successful students. Student-athletes are assessed each semester to determine the necessary academic support to develop their academic plan, whether within the center or on campus.
Â
Student-athletes at FAU have access to using the services of the learning specialist at the SASC. The learning specialist can assist student-athletes with developing and implementing individualized learning plans alongside their academic counselor that will contribute to their academic success. Additionally, each student is evaluated on a semester basis using a student resource indicator, and the recommended resources are determined with their assigned athletic counselor. Student-athletes also have access to learning styles assessments to determine the best way they learn whether visual, auditory, or kinesthetic. The learning specialist can also assist with recommendations in the area of skill building to include time management, study, test taking, and learning strategies.
The learning specialist also serves as the liaison for the Student Accessibility Services Office (SAS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Owls Care Health Promotion (OCHP), and the Dean of Students for Exceptional Circumstance Withdrawals.
Â
The Student-Athlete Success Center also offers a comprehensive tutorial program for student-athletes. The purpose of FAU's tutorial program is to supplement all the sound educational practices (class attendance, note taking, time management, professor contact, etc.) that are necessary for the academic success of all students. Each semester a tutorial staff is hired consisting of well-trained graduate and undergraduate students who have demonstrated high levels of proficiency in their respective subject areas. Special emphasis is given during the first year to help develop strong written and quantitative skills. Writing assistance, math and other subject tutors are available on an appointment basis. While tutors are generally available on an individual basis, group sessions may also be arranged.
Â
Graduate assistants and learning assistants aid with the development and implementation of important fundamental academic skills such as note-taking, exam-taking strategies, communication, and time management under the direction of learning specialists. Learning assistants and graduate assistants do not specialize in a one-course subject, but rather, provide general guidance and support across all courses. In addition, if applicable, learning assistants help student-athletes with developing and carrying out their goals by showing them the necessary skills to achieve them.

First Year Courses
Additionally, student-athletes will participate in Summer Bridge and in a Fall SLS course, which are designed to help new student-athletes acclimate to the collegiate athletic environment. In these courses, a variety of topics are covered ranging from academic enrichment and campus policies to financial literacy and other life skills.
