BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University's football team is in the fourth quarter of their season, and with that comes the recognition of outstanding performances. Who better to lead the way for the Owls than Devin Singletary? The junior running back and the nation's back-to-back leader in touchdowns in a season has been named a Doak Walker Semifinalist. The PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced its 10 semifinalists on Wednesday.
With two regular season games remaining in the 2018 campaign, Singletary sits atop the country's leaderboard in rushing touchdowns scored (20) and total touchdowns (20). He is No. 2 in scoring (12.0 ppg) and total points (120), trailing only a placekicker. Singletary has used his three-year career to accumulate 64 rushing TDs (65 total) which ranks the Deerfield Beach, Florida native No. 6 all-time in FBS history in rushing touchdowns scored. Among active NCAA leaders, he is No. 1 in rushing touchdowns, and his 52 rushing TDs from 2017-18 is 21 touchdowns more than the No. 2 player (Memphis RB Darrell Henderson) over that span. He is No. 9 all-time in Conference USA rushing yards, and all of this comes in just three seasons.
To determine the 2018 finalists, members of the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast their votes after this week's games. Three finalists for the award will be named Monday, Nov. 19. The Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast a second vote to select the 2018 award recipient, and it will be announced live on TheHome Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 6 on ESPN.
The award is named after three-time SMU All-America running back and 1948 Heisman Trophy winner Doak Walker. Walker, who also punted, returned kicks and kicked extra points, led the Mustangs to two Southwest Conference Championships. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions and led the league in scoring his rookie year. During his six years with the Lions, he led the team to two NFL championships and was chosen All-Pro four times. Walker is a member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
