BOCA RATON, Fla. – The lid will be lifted on the 2018 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship Wednesday, as the Florida Atlantic University Owls are in the tournament's very first matchup, at 11:30 a.m. in Norfolk, Virginia, taking on Middle Tennessee.
Owls' Week in Review
The Owls (11-7-1, 8-1-1 C-USA) took a win in their regular season finale, 2-1 over FIU, and coupled with a North Texas loss two days later, shared the C-USA regular season championship with the Mean Green. The team finished 9-1-1 in their last 11 matches, including the 8-1-1 league mark that tied for the best, and is the program's best in their short C-USA history.
Owls' Week in Preview
The Owls and Blue Raiders (10-6-1, 5-4-1 C-USA) are the first of four matchups Wednesday. MT snapped a three-match losing streak with a 1-0 finale win on the road at UAB. They finished in a three-way tie for sixth in the league standings, and once the tiebreakers were sorted out, earned the No. 7 seed.
Whichever team picks up the quarterfinal victory will advance to the C-USA semifinal round, competing in Friday's opening match, at 4:30 p.m., against either No. 3 seed UAB or No. 6 Southern Miss. The tournament championship is Sunday at 11 a.m., with the surviving squad earning the league's automatic bid into the 2018 NCAA Women's College Cup.
Opponent History
FAU and Middle Tennessee matched up on the Owls' Senior Day in Boca Raton on Oct. 14, and it was a junior and a sophomore that hooked up for the only score of the match, with Carolynn Wotring assisting on Sammy Vitols' game-winning goal. Though the Blue Raiders lead the all-time series, 9-6, the Owls have won two of the last three.
After This
Again, whoever wins this opening quarterfinal matchup will move on and be one of the league's final four teams, in Friday's first match in Norfolk.
