BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team defeated Marshall on Friday night 7-3 in the series opener between the two teams, on the back of a complete-game effort from junior righthander Alex House.
The Turning Point
The Owls (23-9-1, 10-3 Conference USA) struck first with a four-spot in the second, highlighted by a two-run single by Esteban Puerta. Though Marshall (17-16, 6-7 C-USA) came back with three of their own in the fourth, House settled down with four straight innings where he faced the minimum three batters (and three straight perfect), and at one point retired 11 in a row and 15 of 16.
The Finish
Two two-out hits by the Owls provided cushion: A Jordan Poore RBI single in the seventh and a two-run home run by David Miranda in the eighth. House ran into a bit of trouble in the ninth but struck out pinch-hitter Dakota Robbins with two on and two out to notch his second complete game of the season.
Notables
- House struck out five, walked just one batter, and only one of the three runs against him was earned. He scattered six Herd hits, including just one over his final five innings of work
- Austin Langham had three singles in his first three at-bats and is hitting .500 (13-for-26) in his last six games. In five of those, he's had two or more hits
- Puerta and Poore each had two hits
- Eric Rivera had an RBI single in the second, and the other run came in on a bases-loaded walk to Jared Shouppe
- 1,305 humans and an innumerable amount of dogs were in attendance for Bark in the Park Vol. 2
Quotable
"I felt our guys did a really nice job, (they) scrapped together some runs and didn't panic in the fourth when (Marshall) scored three," said Head Coach John McCormack. "(Alex House) did a great job, that kind of goes without saying … It was a great performance. He got stronger as the game got on, his breaking stuff got better (and) his changeup got better as the game went on. Again, I thought he deserved a chance to finish it, and he did."
What's Next
Game two between the Owls and Herd begins at 4 p.m. Saturday evening at FAU Baseball Stadium. Marc Stewart takes the ball for FAU against Marshall's Wade Martin.
