BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team will both end a homestand and begin a road trip this weekend, hosting a Conference USA matchup Thursday before traveling for another league contest on Sunday afternoon.
Owls' Week(s) in Review
The Owls (6-5-2, 1-2-1 C-USA) contested home matches two and three of what will end up being a four-match stay at FAU Soccer Stadium, falling to Middle Tennessee Friday, 1-0, and coming away with a Sunday tie versus UAB, 1-1.
Owls' Week in Preview
The week begins early for FAU, hosting Southern Miss (6-5-1, 0-3-1 C-USA) Thursday night at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles' last four matches have all been in league play, with a scoreless tie against WKU their only non-loss in that stretch. Last week, they had only one match, a 1-0 defeat by Rice. Ola Akinniyi and Becky McMullan have five goals each to pace the squad.
Following that, the Owls will travel to take on Charlotte (8-4-0, 3-1-0 C-USA), Sunday at 1 p.m. The 49ers are tied for second in the conference standings, rebounding from last weekend's first league loss (1-0 to UTEP) with a win two days later (3-0 over UTSA). Preseason C-USA Offensive Player of the Year (and 2016 postseason OPOY) Martha Thomas, with a league-leading nine goals, and 2016 C-USA Freshman of the Year Megan Greene (tied for second with eight) have provided a healthy one-two punch, accounting for 17 of the team's 26 goals this year.
Opponent History
The Owls and Golden Eagles have played just twice, splitting results in 2015 (a 3-0 FAU win in Boca Raton) and 2016 (a 2-1 Southern Miss win in Hattiesburg). In last year's matchup, Mary O'Hara had the Owls' lone goal, but USM took it with a score in the 57th minute.
Against Charlotte, FAU holds a 2-1-1 edge, though the 49ers defeated the Owls 4-0 the last time the squads met, in the 2016 Conference USA title match. In the regular season a year ago, in Boca Raton, the contest was a scoreless draw.
After This
The Owls' road trip continues with two more away from home, heading north to take on WKU (Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.) and Marshall (Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.). From there, it's only two more matches on the regular season ledger prior to FAU hosting the 2017 Conference USA Championship.
