BOCA RATON, Fla. - David Miranda rapped two doubles and knocked in three runs, and eight Owl pitchers combined to allow just three hits and an unearned run as the Florida Atlantic University baseball team defeated the Ontario Blue Jays in a Wednesday exhibition, 5-1.
Quotable
"Winning the game is always good, but more importantly I thought it was a great night to get everybody out there and give them a chance to play in an FAU uniform," said Head Coach John McCormack. "All the new guys got out there and played. We had a number of guys that had to take off to class and study hall, so by about the fifth inning we were down to a little bit of a skeleton crew. But these things are more set up for the pitching, and it was really good that those eight guys got out there, pitched really well, competed and did a nice job."
The Turning Point
Miranda's first RBI double came in the fourth inning, and he came around to score on a single by freshman Jared DeSantolo for an early 2-0 lead. Another run came across two innings later, on a single by another first-year, Richie Nizza, to plate Eric Rivera for a three-run edge.
The Finish
As the Owls' pitching contingency continued to mow down their opposition, including a run of eight of 12 Blue Jays retired by strikeout, Miranda finished out the FAU scoring with a two-run double in the seventh, bringing around Brock Nowell and Cody Wilson. Though Ontario got on the board in the eighth, that was all the damage the Owls would incur, and Zach Schneider closed it out with a perfect ninth.
