CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Sept. 11, 2016) - The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team was upended on the road Sunday afternoon by Southeast Missouri, 1-0.
Turning Point:
The Redhawks (6-0-1) got the game's only tally when Natasha Minor headed in the pass off a corner kick from Esmeral Gonzales in the 49th minute.
The Finish:
The Owls (3-4-1) had their first closest shot at a score in the 63rd when Alex Maxson's boot off the corner kick from Asta Arnadottir hit the post, ricocheted back to Maxson, and her second attempt was high. The same right-side post came into play in the 69th on a missile by Sammy Rowland, then in the 76th, a shot by Libby Wissman nearly snuck by the Redhawk keeper but was literally saved at the lip of the goal line.
Notables:
Quotable:
"I thought Southeast Missouri brought great energy, there's a reason that they're still undefeated," said head coach Patrick Baker. "Their keeper made two phenomenal saves (and) we hit the post twice. We would've loved to have at least taken it to overtime, but it just wasn't meant to be."
What's Next:
The Owls return to the FAU Soccer Stadium for two matches this upcoming week: Friday at 7 p.m. against St. Bonaventure and Sunday, also an evening matchup at 6, hosting Conference USA rival FIU in the 2016 league opener.
