BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" Florida Atlantic University juniors CJ Chatham and Cameron Ragsdale were named First Team All-Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association and will be nominated for All-American honors.
Chatham, who became FAU's highest draft pick after being selected last week by the Boston Red Sox in the second round, ended his collegiate career as one of the most decorated players in FAU baseball's history. The Fort Lauderdale native earned Conference USA Player of the Year, C-USA Defensive Player of the Year, and numerous All-American honors after pacing the 2016 FAU offensive attack. Chatham also was named a semifinalist for the nation's top honor â€" the Golden Spikes Award, and for the Brooks Wallace Award, recognizing the top shortstop in the country. Chatham hit .357 with 50 RBI, 48 runs, 17 doubles and eight home runs, slugging .554 in his final campaign.
In his first season at FAU, Ragsdale became one of the nation's top closers, dealing 15 saves on the year. Ragsdale paced FAU's pitching staff with a 1.61 ERA over 24 appearances and 28 innings of work. He struck out 21, allowed just five runs and three extra-base hits, and crafted a streak of 21 consecutive shutout innings. Ragsdale ranks second on FAU's all-time career list with his 15 saves.
The Owls posted a record of 39-19 on the season, won the Conference USA regular-season title and made their 12th appearance in an NCAA Regional. FAU saw five players selected in the 2016 MLB Draft.
