BOCA RATON, Fla. - Having earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Conference USA Tournament, the Florida Atlantic University softball team found out it will head to Gainesville, Fla for its NCAA Regional. The Owls earned a spot in a Regional for the second year in a row and ninth time in school history. It's also the second year in a row and fifth time in school history that the Owls will travel to Gainesville for their Regional. FAU advanced the finals of the Gainesville Regional last season, falling to eventual national champion Florida 1-0 in eight innings.
The Regional will run Friday, May 20 through Sunday, May 22 in a double-elimination format. The Owls will face UCF in their first game at noon on Friday, May 20th at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium on the campus of the University of Florida. The winner of that game will move on to play the winner between Alabama State and the host Gators, who are the no. 1 overall seed in the tournament. The Owls played the Knights earlier this season, winning 2-0 in eight innings in Orlando.
This weekend's Regional will feature two of the top three pitching staffs in the country in terms of ERA. UF is no. 1 in the nation, with a 0.90 team ERA, while the Owls are third, allowing just 1.19 earned runs per game. The Gators (53-5) and FAU (50-7) are also the only two teams in the nation with 50 or more wins this season.
FAU heads into the Regional off of a 6-0 win over UAB in the Championship Game of the C-USA Tournament. 50 wins is the most in a season for the Owls since 2004.
Tickets for the Regional will go on sale to the general public at noon on Monday and are $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 12, seniors (55+) and college students (with valid ID) for a single session or $25 and $10, respectively, for an all session pass. Fans can reach the Gator Ticket Office at 352-375-4683.
The winner of the Gainesville Regional winner advances to face the winner of the Athens Regional. Live stats for all FAU games will be available at fausports.com. Live updates will also be available at twitter.com/fauowlssoftball.
