MIAMI, Fla. - The no. 24 Florida Atlantic University softball team swept its doubleheader with rival FIU on Saturday. The Owls (32-7, 9-2 Conference USA) won game one 4-1 and game two 3-2.
Game 1 Notables
Kylee Hanson threw a complete game three-hitter for her 16th win of the year.
Christina Martinez went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Tatum Buckley went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Delaney Rickey, Emily Lochten and Melissa Martinez all singled and scored.
Key Plays
Lochten, Melissa Martinez and Buckley led off the fourth inning with three straight singles to put FAU up 1-0. Kiley Southall drove in Buckley later in the inning on a fielder's choice. The Panthers cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fifth. In the top the seventh, a Thompson sacrifice fly and a Panther fielding error gave FAU two more runs, accounting for the final score.
Game 2 Notables
Amanda Wilson improved to 9-4 in the circle.
Carnesha Thompson went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Madisyn Palmer went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Christina Martinez and Emily Lochten also had multiple hit games for the Owls.
Kylee Hanson's save was her fourth of the season and sixth of her career. Six career saves is good for third all-time in program history.
Key Plays
The Panthers scored on a groundout in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. FAU responded in the top of the third when Thompson singled to drive in Madisyn Palmer to tie the game. Emily Lochten followed with a bunt single that began a wild sequence that included a Panther error which allowed Thompson and Lochten to score and gave the Owls a 3-1 lead. FIU loaded the bases with just one out in the sixth inning. After a single cut the Owls' lead to 3-2, a fielder's choice at the plate and a Christina Martinez catch at the wall in center ended the frame. Gabby Spallone led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single. At that point, Hanson took over for Wilson in the circle and retired the next three batters to end the game.
