JUPITER, Fla. â€" The Florida Atlantic University baseball team held a 6-1 lead late in its game against the St. Louis Cardinals, but a big eighth inning was the culprit in a 13-6 loss.
The Owls (7-0) saw two shutout innings by lefty Sean Labsan, who squared off against former Owl Austin Gomber. After each pitcher was relieved, the scoring began. The Cardinals struck first with a lone run in the third inning on a fielder's choice before FAU opened the floodgates.
Stephen Kerr singled to lead off the fourth and stole second before coming in to score on a single by CJ Chatham for the first run of the frame. Esteban Puerta was credited with a sacrifice fly when he drove in Billy Endris to give FAU a 2-1 lead. Labsan and Brett Lashley drew back-to-back walks to load the bags for a Tyler Frank two-RBI single up the middle. After a passed ball put two in scoring position, Austin Langham reached on an error that allowed both runs to cross the plate, giving FAU a 6-1 advantage.
The Cardinals broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth, when they sent 15 batters to the plate as part of a 12-run inning, including two homeruns.
The Owls will host Georgetown in a three-game series starting Friday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com. FAU also hosts St. Joseph's and Rutgers in the coming week.
