BOCA RATON, Fla. - Coming off a sweep of the Conference USA regular-season and tournament titles, as well as a second-straight NCAA Regional appearance, the Florida Atlantic University softball team added four student-athletes during the fall National Letter of Intent signing period, announced Head Softball Coach Joan Joyce. All four are expected to enroll in the fall of 2017.
"This is a solid group and they can all contribute immediately." said Coach Joyce.
Sloan Hammons, a pitcher from Durant High School in the Tampa, Fla. will join the Owls following her senior campaign. As a junior, she earned First Team All-County honors, and is also a member of the National Spanish Honor Society.
Kara Lokeinsky will come to FAU from Cooper City where she holds a 38-13 career record in the pitching circle and is a two-time All-State team selection.
"Sloan and Kara will have some big shoes to fill in the circle, but we feel good about them as a duo," said Joyce.
Alex Acevedo, a middle infielder at Orange Park-Oakleaf High School, has played her high school career under the tutelage of former FAU standout Christina Thompson. She has helped the Knights achieve a national ranking.
Amelia Iacovino, a Tampa Steinbrenner High School product, has played on the varsity squad since ninth grade and was named Second Team All-County while helping the Warriors to a district title as a senior.
"(Amelia) and Alex will have a chance to play right away. They're both very good ballplayers," added Joyce.
The Owls open the 2017 season on Friday, Feb. 9, when they play host to North Florida as part of the FAU Kick-Off Classic. Season tickets will be available for purchase by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS or by logging on to FAUsports.com.
