IRVING, Texas â€" Following a pair of conference shutout victories, Florida Atlantic University women's soccer defender Erica Burt has been chosen as Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week.
The redshirt senior played all 180 minutes on the backline of twin 1-0 wins on the road over Middle Tennessee and UAB. It is the third honor of her career and first of the season, joining forward Sammy Rowland as Owls recognized by the league in 2016.
On the year, the native of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, has anchored a defense that has provided seven shutouts, starting every match while playing a team-high 1,135 minutes out of a possible 1,198.
"It's an honor to receive this recognition but it was an overall team effort this weekend," said Burt. "Our entire backline and goalkeeper, Sydney Drinkwater, played lights-out in two important results. We look to build off of this moving forward and to keep posting shutouts."
"We are very excited to have Erica be recognized after this past weekend's games," added Head Coach Patrick Baker. "She was tremendous against Middle Tennessee and UAB, both in defense and starting our attacks. Erica and the backline continue to work hard on refining their game. Her presence in the air and precise passing were definitely on point these past few days. She continues to prove why she is such a talented and team player."
The Owls remain on the road to face Southern Mississippi on Thursday evening, a 5 p.m. EDT start, before returning home this Sunday, taking on Charlotte at 1 p.m.
