BOCA RATON, Fla. - For the eighth consecutive year, members of Florida Atlantic University's baseball team participated as part of Team Alex at the recent South Florida Hydrocephalus Association WALK at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach.
Team Alex walks in support of Alex Rodger, a young man born with hydrocephalus, a chronic neurological condition that has no known cure. For years, Alex participated in Owl Baseball Academy camps, and oftentimes served as the team's batboy. According to his mother Eileen, Alex has had a love of baseball "since he could walk," and she describes the Owls' baseball team as being very special to their family.
"Coach [John] McCormack and the entire team have been special to us since first attending the local Hydrocephalus Association WALK in honor of Alex in October of 2009," said Eileen Rodger. "They have attended every year since, most recently (this past weekend). Coach McCormack should be extremely proud of this amazing group of young men who, not surprisingly, are a direct reflection of who he is. Team Alex is proud to call them friends."
"Being a part of Team Alex for the Hydrocephalus Association WALK is always a highlight of the fall," added John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "Alex is a wonderful young man that has been associated with our program for the last 10 years and is a true inspiration to all who know him. Our guys have gotten to know him over the years and enjoy seeing him at the WALK. We are honored to be on his team."
