Ben Silverman, a Florida Atlantic alum from Thornhill, Ontario, recently qualified for the PGA's Web.com Tour. He decided at the age of 16 that he wanted to become a professional golfer, although he had only been playing the game since he was 14. The Toronto golf season is only five months long, therefore Silverman decided to attend post-secondary education down south so he could practice year round. He attended Johnson & Wales University in Miami and then transferred to Florida Atlantic University for his junior and senior years of college.
Silverman began his professional golf career after his 2010 graduation. He played in a number of developmental tours including the Minor League Golf Tour, NGA Tour and the Professional Golf tour, just to name a few. In 2014 and 2015, Silverman was a full time member of the PGA Tour Canada, also known as the Mackenzie Tour, and now he will be a full-time member of the Web.com Tour.
"I am an extremely competitive person, regardless of whether it involves sports or not. I always want to win," Silverman said.
The Web.com Tour is a developmental tour for the U.S. based PGA tour, giving professional golfers another chance to earn their PGA Tour Card. The Web.com Tour plays a great role in professional golf, by being the pathway for non-members to earn their PGA Tour Card. Silverman earned his cut for the Web.com Tour in December of 2015.
"It meant a great deal to me" he said "I have proven to myself that I have the ability to compete with some of the greatest golfers in the world. I have achieved a level that puts me one step closer to my goal of competing fulltime on the PGA Tour."
Silverman has had unconditional support from his parents and friends throughout his journey.
"My biggest supporter always is my fiancé Morgan. She has sacrificed a lot to be with me," Silverman said.
He divides up his practice time between the driving range, short- game area and putting greens. With all the hours and dedication going into golf, he has had to make some sacrifices throughout his career, like seeing his family during his college career due to golf tournament travel.
Silverman is pursuing his goal to compete full-time on the PGA Tour until his 50s and then possibly play in the Champions Tour until retirement.

Joining Silverman on the Web.com tour will be fellow FAU golf alum and Athletics Hall of Fame member Steven LeBrun.
LeBrun, a member of FAU's golf team from 1996-2000, has played professionally for 15 years. The 2008 Hall of Fame inductee secured the spot after shooting a 41 on the front nine and was four-under to finish within the top-50 and qualify for the Web.com tour.
LeBrun finished second in the final PGA Tour Q School event in 2012, the same year he qualified for the U.S. Open Championship in San Francisco, Calif. He played the following year, 2013, on the PGA Tour. An exemption to the Web.com tour will aide his efforts to return to golf's highest level, the PGA Tour.
