BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" A late penalty kick proved to be the decider as the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team fell 1-0 against UC Irvine Sunday afternoon.
The Owls (6-4) took 13 shots in the match, including seven in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net. Six of FAU's shots were blocked by the Anteater defense.
"We just didn't look like our normal selves," FAU Head Coach Patrick Baker said. "We knew that a goal either way was probably going to take it and unfortunately we had some opportunities but just didn't do it appropriately."
In the 81st minute, UCI's Kiana Palacios slipped a penalty kick just by FAU keeper Sydney Drinkwater's hands for the game-winning goal, her first of the year.
FAU's Claire Emslie and Jade Rhodes each took shots in the final two minutes as the Owls suffered their third consecutive loss.
Drinkwater recorded three saves while Emslie led the Owls with five shots.
FAU opens Conference USA play in Boca Raton with UTEP coming to town on Friday, Sept. 25 and UTSA on Sunday, Sept. 27. For ticket information, visit FAUSports.com or call 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
