With the 2015 FAU volleyball season starting this weekend, FAUSports.com takes a look at each position on the court leading up to the Owls' home tournament. The second installment takes a look at the Owls' setters.
BOCA RATON, Fla. (August 25, 2015) â€" FAU has two players â€" junior Genesis Viera and freshman Ivone Martinez expected to see time as the distributor in the Owls' system.
"We're in a good situation," said FAU Head Volleyball Coach Fernanda Nelson. "Genesis provides leadership, but Ivone has a lot of experience with the Mexican National Team."
Viera returns for her second season in Boca Raton after appearing in all 30 matches during the 2014 campaign. Viera led the squad with 1,118 assists (10.65 per set). The Toa Baja, Puerto Rico native also posted a season-high 61 assists in FAU's 3-1 win over rival FIU, earning C-USA Setter of the Week honors in the process. She also topped the 40-assist mark 13 times during the season.
"Genesis brings a lot of experience as a junior," said Nelson.
A highly-touted freshman, Martinez also will have an opportunity to quarterback the FAU offense. Martinez, who gained extensive international experience as a member of the Mexican national U-18 team, offers a contrasting style to that of Viera.
"They're very different, but I like that, said Nelson. "Ivone is laid back and she's going to calm everything down, but when Genesis is in the game, our offense is a little more fast paced."
When it comes to playing time, Nelson said the opposition may determine which setter is on the court for the Owls.
"I think the 6-2 (offense) is going to be a great option for us, because we have a lot of hitters. But sometimes, we will need to go with a 5-1 to get the slide going a little bit more, but ultimately, it's going to come down to who we're playing and how we're playing."
The 2015 FAU volleyball season starts on Friday, Aug. 28 with the Owls hosting Bethune-Cookman, Stetson, Binghamton and Georgia Southern. On Friday, FAU faces Bethune-Cookman at noon and Stetson at 7 p.m. The Owls will then play Binghamton on 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, before finishing the tournament against Georgia Southern at 6 p.m.
