BOCA RATON, Fla. -
Even in the off season, Florida Atlantic University men's golfers compete in tournaments across the country as they hone their skills and prepare for collegiate competition in the fall.
As he prepares for his senior year, Derron Peyton continues to showcase his talents on the course. Last Monday, the South Florida native shot a round of 69 to qualify for the Florida State Golf Association Amateur Match Play Championship on August 6-9 in Tequesta, Fla.
At the 40th annual Palm Beach Kennel Club/County Amateur Championship, Peyton placed third out of more than 120 competitors with a three-round total of 70-under 211. Peyton had three birdies in the third round and an eagle on the par-five 14th hole, which helped him finish only one stroke behind second place.
"My summer tournament schedule is really good because it gives me a chance to build my confidence," said Peyton. "It also allows me to get a lot of reps and practice in so I can be ready for the upcoming season."
In May, Peyton and fellow teammate Cody Christensen won the 49 and younger open division of the Palm Beach County Better Ball Championship held at Hobe Sound Golf Club. The pair made six birdies and only one bogey in the second round to finish 11-under 133. This result marks Peyton's second PBCGA victory and Christensen's first.
International golfer Chris Thomas has also been performing well at his home course in Surrey, England. Thomas claimed victory at Hankley Common Golf Club's annual Club Championship beating out two former professional golfers with a two-round total of two-over 150. Prior to that tournament, he won the club's Men's Open Competition with a round of 67, which was four under par.
"I'm really happy that my hard work throughout the summer is paying off, and in particular winning the biggest competition of the year at my club" said Thomas. "I am excited to return to FAU in the fall and to help the Owls have our best season yet!"
The team also boasts incoming recruits that are sure to add depth to the squad. One such newcomer is Boynton Beach native Jackson Shoenfelt. Shoenfelt competed alongside Peyton at the Palm Beach Kennel Club/County Amateur Championship and earned 10th place with rounds of 75, 70 and 73.
"It is great to see the guys working hard prior to our fall season," said Angelo Sands, head men's golf coach. "The more they work on their game, the better they will become and the more prepared they will be when they come back in August. I look forward to see how this dedication will translate to success on the course."
The 2015-16 men's golf schedule will be announced in fall 2015.
