BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Los Angeles Angels selected Florida Atlantic University's Brendon Sanger with the 135th overall pick (fourth round) of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft. The junior outfielder from Fort Myers, Fla., is the reigning Conference USA Player of the Year.
"Brendon was a fantastic player during his three seasons at FAU," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "Brendon's draft selection is a direct reflection of the hard work he put in over the last three years. I am so happy for him and his family. It couldn't have happened to a better person."
Sanger, the first Owl taken in his year's draft, was a Louisville Slugger Third Team All-American. He led C-USA in batting average, on-base percentage, runs scored and walks. His .370 batting average led FAU for the third-consecutive year and he owns the school record with 10 career triples.
Sanger had a team-high 26 multi-hit games and a 19-game hitting streak during the 2015 season. He reached base safely in 66 of his last 68 games in an FAU uniform and his 56 walks in 2015 marked the second-most in a season in school history. For his career, Sanger hit .351 with 37 doubles and 11 homers.
The Owls finished the 2015 season 42-19, ranked as high as No. 12 nationally and made their 11th NCAA postseason appearance. Sanger is the 13th player selected in the MLB draft since McCormack became the head coach in 2009.
