Ben Silverman, former Florida Atlantic University golfer, has excelled on the international stage as a member of the Mackenzie Tour, which is a part of the PGA Tour in Canada.
Silverman recently recorded his best professional career finish when he tied for second place at the Syncrude Boreal Open on June 25-28 finishing 16 under par. The Palm Beach Gardens resident was atop the leaderboard every round of the tournament and went into the final 18 holes with a one-shot lead.
After 72 holes, Silverman was locked in a three-way tie with Talor Gooch and Kevin Spooner. After competing in three playoff holes, Silverman was eliminated after shooting par on the 18th hole while Gooch birdied to continue to face soon-to-be tournament champion Kevin Spooner.
"This finish has confirmed that the practice and work I have been doing is good enough to win at a higher level," said Silverman. "It gives me the confidence and motivation to continue doing what I am doing."
Silverman is currently ranked fifth in the Order of Merit after finishing 48th on the Mackenzie Tour last year. The Thornhill, Ontario native turned pro in 2010. He played in one event on the Web.com and PGA Tours and took part in 12 tournaments last year as part of the Mackenzie Tour.
"My goal is to finish top five in the Order of Merit on this tour by the end of the summer, which would automatically qualify me for the Web.com Tour," said Silverman.
While at FAU, Silverman was one of the Owls' top performers earning Sun Belt Conference Male Golfer of the Month for October 2009. As a senior he had a 72.6 scoring average and led the team to a first-place finish in Bethune-Cookman's tournament in 2010. He finished his career at FAU tying for 16th at the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Championship with a six-over-par 222 and a total of 13 birdies.
"Ben really did it all while he was here at FAU," said Angelo Sands, head men's golf coach. "First and most importantly he was an outstanding student. I've never had anyone better than Ben as far as work ethic whether it was on or off the course. I am so happy that he is obtaining the goals that he set for himself."
Silverman will be competing at the Siga Dakota Dunes Open presented by SaskTel in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on July 2-5.
