BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University softball team will continue its season in the 2015 NCAA Tournament. The Owls received an at-large bid to the field of 64 on Sunday night. The Owls didn't have to wait long to discover their fate, as they were in the very first bracket to be released. FAU found out it will head to Gainesville, Fla. for its first NCAA Regional appearance since 2006.
The Regional will run Friday, May 15 through Sunday, May 17 in a double-elimination format. The Owls will face Hofstra (37-12-1) in their first game at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 15th at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium on the campus of the University of Florida. The winner of that game will move on to play the winner between Florida A&M and the host Gators, who are the no. 1 overall seed in the tournament.
"I'm happy to get back to a regional and I'm glad that the committee rewarded us for having such a good season," said Joan Joyce, FAU's head softball coach. "Most importantly, I'm happy that this team gets to keep playing."
FAU finished the regular season 37-17-1, losing to Western Kentucky 3-1 in the Championship Game of the C-USA Tournament. The regional appearance is the 10th time the Owls have made the NCAA Tournament field.
The Owls faced both Hofstra and Florida A&M earlier this season. FAU beat the Rattlers (18-37) 18-0 on February 20 for Coach Joyce's 800th career win. FAU played Hofstra twice during the Parents' Weekend tournament, with the Owls winning the first game 3-2 and the second ending in a 5-5 tie due to Hofstra's travel arrangements. Overall, FAU played nine teams that qualified for the Tournament.
Tickets for the Regional will go on sale to the general public at noon on Monday and are $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 12, seniors (55+) and college students (with valid ID) for a single session or $25 and $10, respectively, for an all session pass. Fans can reach the Gator Ticket Office at 352-375-4683.
The winner of the Gainesville Regional winner advances to face the winner of the South Bend Regional. Friday's game will also air on ESPN3.com. Live stats for all FAU games will be available at fausports.com. Live updates will also be available at twitter.com/fauowlssoftball.
