BOCA RATON, Fla. -
Softball's Emily Lochten and Samantha Messer were named FAU Players of the Week after helping the team advance to the Conference USA Championship game on Saturday. The duo have been key components in the team's season-long success, which the Owls parlayed into a NCAA Regional bid Sunday evening.
Lochten was a key part of the Owls' run to the C-USA championship game last week, posting a .571 batting average with four hits, three runs and a RBI. In the Owls' 5-0 win over North Texas on Thursday, she doubled and scored. In the semifinal game against UTSA, she went 2-for-3 and scored twice in FAU's 6-4 come-from-behind victory. On Saturday, she drove in FAU's only run of the game. For the weekend, Lochten had a slugging percentage of .714 and an on-base percentage of .600.
Messer came out of the bullpen on Friday and pitched four innings of no-hit relief in the Owls 6-4 come from behind win over UTSA on Friday. The senior added five strikeouts and helped FAU reach the C-USA championship game. Messer finished the season with a 2.79 ERA, a 9-7 win-loss record and three shutouts.
Softball will head to Gainesville, Fla. for its first NCAA Regional appearance since 2006 and 10th NCAA appearance in the program's 21-year history. The Regional will run Friday, May 15 through Sunday, May 17 in a double-elimination format. The Owls will face Hofstra (37-12-1) in their first game at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 15th at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium on the campus of the University of Florida. The winner of that game will advance to play the winner between Florida A&M and the host Gators, who are the nation's No. 1 seed.
