Bittersweet Outing as Softball Defeats Bethune-Cookman But Falls 1-0 to No. 11 FSU

BOCA RATON, Fla. -
After earning a 6-0 win over Bethune-Cookman to start the day, the Florida Atlantic University softball team fell 1-0 to No. 11 Florida State on Saturday night.
The first game against the Wildcats saw FAU manufacture nine hits from six different batters with Emily Lochten and Laura Mann each going 2-for-4. Mann had two doubles with one RBI while Alex Miller, Delaney Rickey, and Mickey Belleach had one RBI apiece. Sophomore Amanda Wilson improved her record to 5-1 racking up six strikeouts and only giving up four hits.
The Owls would score their first run in top of the second after Mann began the inning with a double to left center. With two outs, Miller hit a double to score Mann. The next two runs came in the top of the fourth, which began with a Lochten infield single. Mann's second double of the game would score Lochten. A Rickey groundout would score Mann and bring FAU up 3-0.
FAU would score one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. After hitting a single to the shortstop, Christina Martinez would score on a fielding in the fifth. In the sixth, Sarah Howell would earn the team's fifth run off catcher interference as she was coming into home. The final run came in the top of the seventh after Lochten doubled to left field, stole third, and came home off a double by Bell.
In the second game of the night, the Owls and the Seminoles would play a defensive battle that would see FSU score off an FAU error in the top of the fifth. The only two hits would come from Lindsey Shell and Lochten. Kylee Hansonwould see her first loss of the season as she moves to 6-1. Despite the loss, Hanson had a strong performance in the circle with seven strikeouts and five hits allowed.
The first inning began with a bang as FSU would load the bases and Carnesha Thompson would get the first two outs by catching a screaming liner and then getting the runner at third who had taken a lead down the third base line. Hanson would end the inning with her first strikeout of the game.
FAU left two runners on in the bottom of the fourth after Christina Martinez reached on a fielding error, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Thompson, and moved to third off a Lochten single. The fifth inning began with a walk and a sacrifice bunt to advance the Seminole runner to second. A fly out to center field would be the second out of the inning but the runner on second would score off a bad throw from Christina Martinez to third base. The Owls would leave pinch runner Kiley Southall stranded on third in the bottom of the fifth and were hitless for the remainder of the game.
