BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University softball team split its doubleheader with FIU on Saturday, losing the first game 4-2 and winning the second 5-1.

"We had a bunch of missed opportunities in the first game, leaving 11 runners on base," said FAU head coach Joan Joyce. "In the second game, we did a better job of taking advantage of our scoring chances, but didn't score after the first two innings." FIU (21-16, 4-7 C-USA) scored a run in the top of the first and added three more in the top of third inning to take a 4-0 lead in game one. FAU (25-9-1, 6-2) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Emily Lochten scored on a Panther scoring error. The Owls added another run in the fifth inning on a wild pitch. However, FAU left the bases loaded in both innings. Samantha Messer threw a complete game in the loss.

The Owls defeated FIU 5-1 in the nightcap. Lochten drove in two runs in the bottom of the first when her double allowed Lindsey Shell and Christina Martinez to score. A Laura Mann sacrifice fly later in the inning drove in Carnesha Thompson to make the score 3-0.

Delaney Rickey drove in Tatum Buckley with an infield single in the second inning to push the lead to 4-0. Thompson scored on another Panther error for the final FAU run. The Panthers scored a run in the top of the seventh and had runners on second and third with just one out before a groundout and a strikeout ended the game.

Kylee Hanson threw a complete game and struck out a career-high 15 for her 10th win of the year.

The Owls and Panthers will meet in a rubber match at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Live video and live stats of the game will be available at fausports.com.
