BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to FIU on Sunday.
The game was a pitchers' duel between FIU's Corinne Jenkins and Florida Atlantic's Amanda Wilson in the early going. The Owls (25-10-1, 6-3 C-USA) threatened in the bottom of the third when they loaded the bases with two outs, but a popup ended the inning.
"We've gotten away from playing small ball and that's always been what has gotten us going," said FAU head coach Joan Joyce. "It seems like we were waiting around for the big hit."
FIU took advantage of their opportunity to score in the top of the fourth when a two-run double put the Panthers (22-16, 5-7) ahead 2-0. FAU had runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn't crack the scoreboard.
The Panthers added another run in the seventh when Dominique Grossman got caught in a run long enough to allow Marisa McGregor to score an insurance run. FAU left 19 runners on base in its two losses this weekend.
FAU will make a five-game road trip to Kentucky, beginning on Friday with a doubleheader at Western Kentucky. First pitch on Friday is set for 5 p.m. eastern. Live stats will be available at www.fausports.com.
