BOCA RATON, Fla. - The battle for the Florida Atlantic University baseball team's Iron Owl Award is underway as the Owls compete for the annual title.
"I love the Iron Owl competition," FAU Head Coach John McCormack said. "It's grea to see our guys compete for a championship in a variety of events. In addition, it shows teamwork in the team events."
Last year's winner, Seth McGarry, went on to be drafted in the eighth round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
One of the most important traditions surrounding the FAU Baseball program is the coveted "Iron Owl" award. The "Iron Owl" award is a competition that was debuted prior to the 2009 preseason. Its goal is the encouragement of team camaraderie, while at the same time making sure each individual player understands what is like to compete on a daily basis. It is our aim that each player reaches their highest-potential in the classroom, on the field and in the weight room.
The award indentifies the strongest Owl baseball player - both mentally and physically. A series of events will be held throughout the fall season that will test each student-athletes' physical strength, knowledge of the game and academic performance.
Each event and category will be graded and a running total of each player's rank is kept by the FAU coaching staff.
