The Florida Atlantic University swimming and diving team will have a new face poolside this season as the Owls name Greg Brown as an assistant coach.
"We are very excited that Greg will join the team for the 2015-16 season," FAU Head Coach Lara Preacco said. "As our new assistant swimming coach, Greg brings 11 years of college coaching experience to FAU, with six of those being at the Division I level."
Brown comes from Marywood University in Scranton, PA where he served as the head men's and women's coach from 2010-15. During Brown's five seasons, he helped lead the Pacers into the top half of the Landmark Conference. He coached multiple conference champions and record holders while also being named the 2013-14 Landmark Conference Men's Co-Coach of the Year. During his final two seasons, nine athletes were named to the All-Conference team and during the 2015 season 17 athletes were named Landmark All-Academic.
Prior to going to Marywood, Brown was the Head Women's Swimming and Diving Coach at Siena College in Albany, N.Y. During his four seasons as head coach, the Saints compiled a 29-21 record, including the program's only 10-win season in 2009-10. At the 2010 Metro Atlantic Conference Championships the team finished third overall and Brown was named MAAC Women's Coach of the Year.
"While coaching at the last two schools, Greg elevated them to new heights and achieved many new records; which led him to be named Coach of the Year more than once," Preacco said.
"Greg brings the same passion and energy to FAU, where he wants to use his experience to help our team reach new goals," Preacco said. "Greg's desire to bring a positive, upbeat attitude to the office and the deck each day is contagious"
Brown started his coaching career in Burlington, Vt. where he spent four years as the Head Swim Coach at the Greater Burlington YMCA while also working as a volunteer assistant at the University of Vermont.
"I love coaching swimming, it's a great sport," Brown said. "My goal is to always push the athletes to do their very best and help them achieve all their goals; but I also want to smile, see them smile, and know that we are doing something special together."
Brown's aspirations are also a strong driving force in his coaching: "With the men recently joining the CCSA and the women continuing on in C-USA, I believe this is a very exciting time for the program," he said. "I have always wanted to help a team win a conference championship, and through quality practices and outstanding recruiting, this can be done at FAU. That is a major goal and I want FAU to be a conference contender each and every season."
A native of Mechanicsburg, Penn., Brown attended Lycoming College in Williamsport, Penn., where he earned his B.A. in History. Additionally, he was a four year All-Conference swimmer, and was named team captain after winning the coaches award and being named team MVP. Brown also won seven conference medals for the Warriors.
