HUNTINGTON, W. Va. -- The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team earned its fourth consecutive victory, and tenth of the season, with a 1-0 overtime win at Conference USA rival Marshall on Friday.
The Owls (10-7, 4-3 C-USA) are on their longest winning streak since 2008 and their ten victories is the most in a season since 2006.
FAU goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater moved into sole possession of second place in program history with her 15th career shutout as the junior has now dealt three consecutive shutouts. Drinkwater faced a flurry of 27 Marshall (10-3-3, 3-2-2 C-USA) shots and tallied nine saves, tying a career high.
""Tremendous road win for our young ladies this evening at Marshall University," FAU Head Coach Patrick Baker said. "We weren't ourselves in the first half and a lot of that was due to Marshall playing at a high level. We presented two things to the team at half-time and they responded in the second half / overtime. It was a very good game between two teams that seemed destined for a second overtime period."
The Owls posted 13 shots, including two in the overtime period by Geovana Alves and Maddie Pung, but failed to find the back of the net.
With just one second to play in the first overtime, an own goal by Marshall gave FAU the sudden-death victory.
"With 12 seconds left, we were able to find Claire Emslie in a wide position 25 yards from goal and she had just enough time to make a move that led to a dangerous service in the box," Baker said. "Geovana Alves ran over the ball from about two yards out and then there was some confusion between their goalkeeper/defender. Next thing we know the ball has nestled into the goal with 2 seconds left and it was a mad dash to the celebration."
Alves led FAU with four shots while Claire Emslie and Erica Burt each tallied a pair.
The Owls return to action as they host UAB on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. for Senior Day where FAU will honor its six seniors. For ticket information, visit FAUSports.com or call 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
"After starting off conference play 0-3-0 and now having won 4 straight (first time since 2008 / most Conference USA wins in history) the players have stayed the course," Baker said. "They were a pleasure to watch train yesterday under the lights and couldn't be more proud of their resilience tonight. They are capable of having a special season and we need a great week of preparation for UAB and FIU."
