Florida Atlantic University men's and women's swimming and diving participated in the FIU Invite on Saturday with the women claiming second place out of 10 teams with a final score of 432.50 and the men taking third with a score of 499.50.
A total of 12 schools participated in this year's event including FIU, West Virginia Tech, Wheaton, Indian River, McMaster, Keene State, Duquesne, Binghamton, Barry, Springfield, and Lynn.
To start off the day, the women's team of Rachel Crino, Hannah Roper, Frida Nilsson, and Agnes Bucz claimed first place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:46.93. In the same event, the men's group of John Brennock, John Nolte, Torbjorn Persson, and Matthieu Burtez took second place in 1:35.06.
The next event was the 200 free in which Katie Dodge was the women's top finisher coming in fourth place with a time of 1:55.63. Senior Richard Andrews claimed first place for the men in the 200 free with a final time of 1:42.58.
Crino had another big finish in the 100 back, taking third place in 59.42. In the same event, Anett Kovacs had lifetime best time of 1:02.52. Hunter Swartsel was the men's top finisher in the 100 back earning sixth with a final time of 53.96. Roper was the top finisher in the 100 breast for the women taking sixth in 1:07.73. Landi, Aaron Custodio and Johannes Johnston took sixth (1:00.94), seventh (1:01.27), and eighth (1:01.28) in this event.
Junior Kovacs and senior Nilsson tied for sixth place in the 50 fly both with personal best times of 26.46. Nolte also set a personal best for the men, earning second place with a time of 23.29. Persson, Andrews, Swartsel, Joseph Steele, and Cole Wisecarver also set season bests in the 50 fly.
The first women's finisher in the 50 free was Nilsson in fifth with a time of 24.99. Kovacs followed in seventh with a career best time of 25.10. Burtez saw his first win of the day in the 50 free with a time of 21.20. He was followed by Brennock in fourth (21.75) and Persson in sixth (21.92).
Kovacs had another top five finish claiming fourth in the 100 free with a time of 53.85. Andrews also took fourth for the men with a final time of 48.15. The 500 free had Bridget Belcik earning 13th place (5:22.58) and El-Hamaki setting a lifetime best of 5:25.00, which earned her 14th.
Bucz was the Owls' top performer in the 50 back where she came in second with a lifetime best of 26.69. Crino was close behind tying for fourth with a time of 28.23. Junior Abbey King and sophomore Rachel Rende set personal bests finishing in 30.24 and 31.18, respectively. Nolte earned third place for the men with a lifetime best time of 24.97. Swartsel came in fifth with a time of 25.25. Steele had a career high time of 25.47, which was good for eighth. Landi also had a career high time with 26.63.
In the women's 50 breast, Roper took seventh with a personal best time of 31.44. Sahra El-Hamaki had a lifetime best as well with a time of 35.22. Custodio was the men's first finisher in this event coming in 13th (28.89). Johnston had a lifetime best time of 28.91, Burtez had a career high time of 29.33, Andrews had a personal best time of 29.41, and Wisecarver had a lifetime best of 30.93.
In the women's 1 meter dive, freshman Alexa Elkins took second place with Kiley Kuether close behind in third with final scores of 256.60 and 247.95, respectively. In the 3 meter, Kuether was FAU's top finisher coming in fourth with a total of 258.30. Elkins followed in fifth with a final score of 249.30.
Nilsson saw her first solo win of the day in the 100 fly with a final time of 56.11. Nolte took third for the men with a time of 52.45. With a season best time of 52.60, Persson claimed fifth place.
With her third top-three finish of the day, Bucz took second in the 100 IM with a season best time of 59.05. In the men's race, Nolte had another great finish coming in second place in 53.25. Brennock and Burtez took fourth (54.78) and fifth (54.86), respectively.
To close out the meet, Bucz, Nilsson, Kovacs and Dodge claimed third in the 200 free relay with a final time of 1:39.04. Burtez, Brennock, Nolte, and Swartsel took second in the men's 200 free relay with a time of 1:26.51. The team of Persson, Austin Olivares, Steele and Andrews took fifth in 1:27.33.
The team will face Central Connecticut State and Texas Christian in Miami, Fla. on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 12 p.m.
