SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Double-doubles from both Liene Mellupe and Genesis Viera weren't enough to help the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team in a 3-1 (27-25, 25-20, 17-25, 27-25) loss to UTSA on Friday.
The Owls (10-5, 1-1 C-USA) trailed 15-7 in the first set, before rallying to tie the score at 20. The two teams went back and forth for the next several points, both teams had chances to close out the set, but the Roadrunners took the final three points of the set to win 27-25.
Kristina Rankovic's serving gave the Owls an early 5-2 lead in the second set. UTSA stormed back to take an 18-11 lead on its way to a 25-20 victory. The third set was a back and forth affair that featured eight ties and four lead changes. The final tie came at 11 before the Owls went on a 14-6 run to take the set. Kristi Tekavec and Ivana Bulajic both had four kills in the set.
FAU's fast start lead to an 11-5 advantage early in set number four. The Roadrunners fought their way back to tie the score at 20. Similar to the first set, both teams had opportunities to take the set, but UTSA eventually prevailed 27-25. Viera (40 assists, 10 digs) and Mellupe (10 kills, 14 digs) both tallied their fourth double-double of the year. Tekavec had a team high 15 kills.
The Owls will travel to UTEP on Sunday to play the Miners. Match time is set for 2 p.m. eastern. Links to live stats and live video will be available at fausports.com.
