EL PASO, TEXAS - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team swept UTEP 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 30-28) on Sunday afternoon. FAU (11-5, 2-1 C-USA) opened the match with a 14-7 lead over UTEP. Seven Miner errors allowed the Owls to extend their lead and take set one, 25-11.
The Owls picked up their intensity and applied more pressure as they jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the second set. Holding UTEP to only five kills and a .000 hitting percentage, FAU claimed the second stanza, 25-12.
Much like the first two sets, FAU opened with the advantage, as the Owls hammered out three consecutive kills. UTEP would work to chip away at FAU's lead with small rallies. With the Owls leading 19-16, a 5-0 Miner run gave UTEP a 21-19 lead. However, despite gaining its first lead over FAU, back-and-forth play would keep UTEP from extending its advantage as the teams tied seven times. Tied at 28, consecutive kills by Kristi Tekavec clinched the set and match for FAU.
Brittney Brown led the Owls with 12 kills and seven total blocks. Tekavec finished with 11 kills and eight digs, while Katarina Stepanovic added 10 kills. FAU returns home on Friday, Oct. 4 to play UAB. Match time is set for 7 p.m. Live stats will be available via GameTracker at fausports.com.
