MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Heavy rains set in early on Friday, making for a sloppy playing surface as the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team fell 1-0 at Middle Tennessee in Conference USA action.
The Owls (6-6-2, 1-2-1 C-USA) finished the match with a flurry of corner kicks, including four in a 32-second span in the 88th minute, but were unable to find the back of the net.
FAU goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater made four saves on the evening, including three in the first half to keep the game scoreless at the intermission.
In the second half, the rains fell once more causing problems for both teams.
MT (5-6-2, 2-2-1 C-USA) broke the tie in the 79th minute on a goal by Peyton McCollum. Off an assist by Brianna Jasenak, McCollum took aim for the right post, speeding the ball by the diving Drinkwater from 23 yards out. The ball ricocheted off the right post and just found the inside part of the left post to bounce in for what proved to be the game-winner.
Both teams managed 16 shots on the night and the Owls held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Taylor Townsend led FAU with four shots while Asta Arnadottir and Olivia Mbala took three apiece.
The Owls travel to Birmingham to take on UAB on Sunday, Oct. 12 with a 1 p.m. CT kickoff. The Blazers were scheduled to play FIU on Friday, but the match was postponed to a later date due to weather.
