BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The goalposts proved to be the enemy for the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team on Sunday as three potential game-winning goals glanced off the uprights. The Owls (6-6-3) tied 0-0 at Conference USA foe UAB.
FAU goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater earned her seventh shutout of her debut season with five saves in the match.
The Owls refused to be outshot for the ninth consecutive match, placing eight of their 15 shots on goal. Over the last nine matches, FAU has taken 156 shots compared to just 84 by their opponents.
Claire Emslie and Hildur Hauksdottir led the way with three shots apiece, while Taylor Townsend, Olivia Mbala and Asta Arnadottir each took multiple shots.
Dani Dangremond had a chance at a spectacular goal in the final seconds of regulation, but it ricocheted off the post to send the game to overtime. Emslie took two shots in the first overtime while the FAU defense did not give UAB any opportunities.
With 24 seconds remaining in the second overtime, MBala had a good look at a winning goal, but hers also met the left post, bouncing back into play and keeping the match at a draw.
The Owls return home to host two of the top squads in C-USA as North Texas comes to Boca Raton for a 6 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 17. FAU hosts Rice for Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m.
