BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University men's tennis has hired Ivan Machado as an assistant coach. Machado comes to Florida Atlantic from the University of South Carolina where he was a member of the men's tennis team.
Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Machado was one of the Brazil's top junior tennis players. Machado played four years for the University of South Carolina where he finished his career as one of South Carolina's most active players. He currently holds the South Carolina's record for career SEC doubles matches played with 42 and is second in SEC career combined matches played with 82. Machado also is 6th in the program's history with more than 250 combined matches played. He was ranked as high as No. 9 in NCAA doubles and competed in the 2009 NCAA Doubles Championship. This is Head Coach Ricardo Gonzalez's first hire and he believes Machado will bring a lot to the program.
"I am extremely excited to welcome Ivan Machado as part of our coaching staff," said Gonzalez. "Ivan is a perfect fit to this team. His knowledge of the game will benefit us and allow us to make big strides towards our goals. Florida Atlantic is fortunate to have him join our family and I am looking forward to our first journey together."
The Owls have returned following the break and will be welcomed by Machado.
"I'm honored and grateful for this opportunity. It feels great! FAU is the perfect place to start my college coaching career," Machado said. ""FAU has a young team with a lot of potential. When Ricardo Gonzalez talked to me about FAU, I knew I wanted to be in Boca Raton. More importantly, I wanted the opportunity to work with Ricardo. We are both extremely competitive and I think we can really do something special together."
