BOCA RATON, Fla.- Two weather stoppages, an own goal and a last minute game-winning goal highlighted Florida Atlantic University women's soccer match against Miami on Sunday. Three and a half hours after play initially started, the Hurricanes (5-0) came away with a 2-1 victory over the home Owls (0-4-1).
After a scoreless first half that saw a 43-minute lightning delay, Miami struck in the 49th minute. Following a deflected corner kick, Gracie Lachowecki found Erin McGovern who put the ball in the top right corner of the net to put the Hurricanes up 1-0.
The Owls got on the board in the 79th minute when a Dani Dangremond cross was deflected by a Miami defender into the Hurricane net. The own goal tied the game at 1-1.
Neither team mustered many shots until the final minute when Miami's Ashley Flinn broke free down the middle of the field to score the game winner with just 40 seconds remaining.
Senior goalkeeper Courtney Zwetsch made eight saves on the day, including six in the second half. Miami outshot the Owls 20-13 and took 11 corner kicks.
FAU goes on the road next weekend when it faces Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Columbia as part of the North Florida Invitational in Jacksonville.
