Boca Raton, FL - Florida Atlantic University redshirt sophomore Kevin Alexander has grabbed the early lead in baseball team's 2012 Iron Owl competition. This annual event features eight tests that identify the strongest Owl baseball player - both mentally and physically - during fall offseason workouts.
The team began the competition on Thursday morning with each player completing a 800-meter dash. Alexander edged out redshirt freshman Bo Logan by one second, finishing in 2:16.58. Alexander gained 10 bonus points for the victory while Logan, senior Ahmed Garcia and newcomers Billy Bolding and Mike Sylvestri received five bonus points for having top-five performances.
Future events will test physical strength, knowledge of the game and academic performance.
This marks the fourth year for FAU Baseball's Iron Owl Award competition. Senior Alex Hudak is the defending champion, paving the way for his strong 2010 season in which he led the team in hitting (.360 batting average) and earned all-Sun Belt Conference honors. Lou Morey earned top honors in 2009 and 2010.
