Boca Raton, FL - Winning the last two events has catapulted defending champion Alex Hudak into the lead of the 2012 Iron Owl competition after three events. The senior outfielder had the best performance in the tire flip and sand bag events, conducted the past two weeks of the fall workouts.
This annual event features eight tests that identify the strongest baseball player - both mentally and physically - on the 2012 Owls' roster.
Hudak has compiled 109 points and leads second-place freshman Billy Golding by 13 points heading into next Wednesday's contest. Redshirt sophomore Kevin Alexander stands in third place with 93 points, while junior Michael Sylvestri and redshirt freshman Bo Logan are tied for fourth place at 89 points.
Hudak won the sand bag event by carrying the bags 200 yards in 40.31 seconds. The Mount Dora, Fla. native also took the top spot in the tire flip, covering 60 yards in 41.84 seconds.
Junior Dylan Seigel was just one second shy of beating Hudak in the sand bag event at 41.25 seconds, while Golding was third (42.50 seconds) to round out the strong and balanced field of players.
Future events will test physical strength, knowledge of the game and academic performance.
This marks the fourth year for FAU Baseball's Iron Owl Award competition. Lou Morey earned top honors in 2009 and 2010.
