DAYTONA BEACH, FL (September 17, 2011) - Freshman Chandler Hatton had 21 kills and 13 total blocks on the day as the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team swept both of its matches at the Holiday Inn Inviational.
The Owls (2-8) swept Savannah State (25-14, 25-18, 25-21) in their first match of the day. FAU hit .303 in the first set, its best hitting percentage of any set this season. The second set was tied at six, when the Owls went on a 14-3 run, keyed by three service aces by Grace Vega. FAU would go on to win the second set 25-18. Vega's serving helped the Owls seal the match in the third set, adding to more aces as part of 10 straight points for FAU.
FAU rallied from a two-set deficit to edge Stetson in five sets (23-25, 18-25, 25-21,25-21, 15-10) in its second match of the day. The Hatters and Owls were tied 13 times in the first set, the final tie coming at 23 each, before a Hatter kill and service ace gave Stetson the first set. The second set was tied at 15 before Stetson closed on a 10-3 run to go ahead two sets to none. The two teams were tied at 20 in the third set before a 5-1 FAU run, including a solo block and a block assist by Hatton gave the Owls the set.
The Owls trailed by as many as five points in the fourth set but were able to fight back and push the game to a fifth set with a 25-21 win. Set number five was tied at four, but the Owls took nine of the next 11 points on their way to a 15-10 win.
Georgia Robinson had a team-high 25 kills on the day. FAU will wrap up the Holiday Inn Invitational on Sunday, playing Hampton University at 11 a.m. before playing the host Wildcats at 2 p.m. Live stats will be available at the tournament central page at www.b-cuathletics.com.
