DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Freshman Madison Lang had 84 assists and 27 digs on Sunday to help the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team split its matches at the Holiday Inn Invitational.
The Owls (3-9) lost to Hampton in five sets (25-18, 18-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-12) in their first match of the day. FAU and HU split the first four sets and were tied at eight in the fifth set when the Pirates scored three straight points. HU eventually ended up with four straight match points. The Owls fought off the first two, but a Pirate kill ended the match. Cintia Nightingale had a career-high 28 digs in the match.
FAU defeated Bethune-Cookman (25-17, 25-19, 19-25, 25-20) in four sets in its second match on Sunday. The Owls hit a season best .412 in their first set win, committing just one attack error in the set. FAU led by as many as seven points in the second set, but BCU rallied to within three points late in the set. However, the Wildcats would get no closer and FAU held on to take a 2-0 lead. In the third set, a .031 hitting percentage for FAU, combined with a .312 hitting percentage for BCU enabled the Wildcats to cut their deficit in half. Sara Stoll was the key to the Owls' fourth set win, tallying three kills and three total blocks as FAU won the set 25-20. Lang and Georgia Robinson were named to the All-Tournament Team.
FAU will begin Sun Belt play next weekend, traveling to Denver and North Texas on Friday and Sunday respectively.
