BOCA RATON, FL (August 23, 2011) - Florida Atlantic University's football team was back on the Tom Oxley practice fields on Tuesday for their first practice since Fanfest and first since the start FAU's fall semester.
With the first game of the season approaching, less than two weeks, against the Florida Gators, FAU began putting together plays for their Saturday, September 3 game. This was also the first practice the Owls have had with a named first string quarterback.
Head Football Coach Howard Schnellenberger announced, Tuesday, that redshirt junior Graham Wilbert edged out David Kooi for the starting position behind center.
"He's been very consistent," said Schnellenberger, "I hope it (naming the first string quarterback) lights a fire under Kooi and gives Graham a little confidence."
The Valencia, CA native saw action in two games last season. Wilbert first saw playing time in the Owls' home game against Michigan State at Ford Field where he drove the offense down the field with two passing attempts completing one for a career long 41 yards. Wilbert also saw action against USF where he suffered a broken thumb on his throwing hand.
With Wilbert taking the majority of the reps at quarterback, the Owls went through a full pads practice beginning with individual drills, going into 7-on-7 and ending practice with team drills.
During 7-on-7 wide receiver Stephan Clark made multiple catches and tight end Alex Deleon also looked good connecting on offense, while Christian Milstead played good coverage on defense and defended one pass. Linebacker Conrad Johnson also broke up a pass in team drills, and Damian Fortner ran the ball well during team work. T
he Owls will return to the Tom Oxley practice field 3:30 p.m.Wednesday where the team will continue to prepare for the Florida Gators.
